Mangalili is a mortuary pole painting reflecting the role of Nyapalinu, the Creator Woman throughout the Wet Season. Symbolism runs throughout the entire piece where bands of diagonal crosses represent rain and contrasting dotted lines represent saltwater and turtle tracks in sand dunes. Collectively, the symbolic motifs convey the clouds’ absorption of saltwater and it’s conversion into freshwater rain, which is cyclically carried back over the hinterland. The sculpture’s ritualistic purpose and traditional function is to keep the contamination of death within the hollow log during perilous yet fruitful seasons.
