Dazzling in its vibrancy, Red of Summer brings together a number of Larter’s artistic preoccupations. He admired greatly the works of Seurat and Signac and this is evident in the colour – contrasting, almost pointillistic application of paint across the canvas. During the 1980s a fascination with the environment and the atmospheric effects of nature guided Larter further toward abstraction and works from this period feel highly sensory. This richly coloured painting exudes the feeling of summer heat with its vibrant, almost pulsating surface.
