Selected Australian Works of Art, Lauraine Diggins Fine Art, Melbourne, October 1983, cat no. 45
A prominent member of the artistic Boyd Family and the uncle of Arthur Boyd, Theodore Penleigh was revered in the early years of last century for his exquisitely atmospheric landscape paintings in both oils and watercolours. He was awarded the Wynne prize in 1914 garnering praise for his exceptional ability at capturing the effects of light and creating evocative moods. The Portsea pictures are among the artists most remarkable and the handling of the watercolour medium in this impressively scaled work is truly exceptional.
