Charles Fouqueray was an exquisite colourist who worked in France and travelled extensively throughout the early part of the 20th century. Port Malabar and its companion piece Port du Canton reveal the artist’s fascination with the exotic artistic possibilities afforded by ‘the Orient’. He was a leading member of Academiedes Beaux Arts in Paris and also an official painter for the Navy Department. Fouqueray was awarded the 1909 Prix Rosa Bonheur and the First Prix Indochinein 1914.
